Logist pharma was set up to support access to cannabis medicines for those who need it. We specialise in education and support for healthcare professionals to help them navigate the system and understand what role they can play for their patients.
A recent YouGov poll showed that in the UK an estimated 1.4 million patients are taking illegally sourced cannabis for medicinal purposes. Given the number of GP practices in the country this means that somewhere between 40 and maybe even up to 150 to 200 patients per practice will be going to the black market to buy illicit products. Without medical oversight, without knowing what they are actually buying, what contaminants may be in it and probably without being able to chose a suitable product.
If a patient asks you about cannabis medicines there are several things you can do. The easy option is to refer them directly to us and we can connect them to a cannabis clinic or a prescribing specialist. You can also contact us directly and we will arrange for one of our team to train you or your colleagues and give you some insights into the role you can actually play in taking care of these patients if and when they start using cannabis medicines.
In short, GPs can play a significant role in supporting their patients in two ways:
- If you feel it’s appropriate you can start patients on the path to a prescription for cannabis medicines by referring them to a relevant private specialist who can start treatment.
- When patients are stable and happy with their prescribed medicine you can take over the continued review as part of the shared care agreement. Repeat prescriptions will still need to be handled privately.
We anticipate that in future GPs will play a wider role in prescribing cannabis medicines and we are happy to facilitate any education and support in order to support your patients.
